6/27/14 7:30 – Springerville, Ariz. – The San Juan Fire is located north of Arizona State Highway 260 and south of the town of Vernon off of US Highway 260 (approx. 3 ½ hours from Phoenix).
Today: The Fire laid down overnight and fire activity resumed this morning and on into the afternoon. The fire crossed containment lines around 1600 hours, and crews are re-establishing the lines on both east and west sides. The north end of the fire is holding. The northeast corner of the fire burned into the White Mountain Stewardship project area and dropped to the ground. This allowed crews to utilize burn out operations off of Forest Service Road 61. Firefighters will continue to actively suppress the fire where it is most active. In dense, mixed conifer and steep terrain with dry underbrush along the southwest boundaries (air attack is concentrating using slurry in these active fire areas).
Drought conditions remain, with winds gusts to 30 mph with low humidity and temperatures in the 90s over the weekend.
Size: Approximately 5,000 acres (as of 1700 hours)
Containment: 0%
Location: Originated on the San Juan Flats area located on the Fort Apache Reservation and has since moved on the Apache-Sitgreaves NFs. Fort Apache is the lead agency until 2000 hours this evening.

Cause: Unknown, the fire is under investigation
Structures Threatened: Approximately 90 structures (includes residences, well houses, barns, and sheds)
Injuries: No injuries reported.
Current Resources: 9 Hot Shot Crews, 12 Type 3 engines, 5 heavy air tankers (multiple aerial suppression throughout the day) to include: 3 Type I helos and several drops from a DC-10, P2s, C-130, MD87 and a V-Lat.
Closures: Law enforcement has road blocks at FSR 271B, CR 3140 at Carlock Ranch, FSR 267 at FSR 224, FSR 117 & FSR 96, and CR 3140 at CR 3261.
Evacuations: Evacuations were issued Thursday evening by the Apache County for the subdivisions of Red Cabin Ranch and Whiting Homestead. Today mandatory evacuations were issued for Carlock Ranch south of Buckelew Springs and along FSR 61 and FSR 2. Pre-evacuation notices have been given to the Greens Peak Hideway. County Emergency Management encourages those in the affected neighborhoods to begin packing important items they may need for several days. These items include prescriptions, important papers, any special dietary needs and pets.
Note: Evacuees can go to Round Valley Middle School in Eagar, AZ, and they must call the Joint Information Command Center at 928-333-3412 to tell of their location.
