6/16/16 5:00 pm – Members of various response agencies gave a briefing at tonight’s press conference. The Type 1 incident management team took over command of the fire today and will continue the hard work and efforts of the responders already on scene.
The winds today did not negatively impact the fire as previously anticipated which allowed for crews to hold lines. Air assets will continue to aid in battling this fire until 1900. Law enforcement agencies from all over Navajo, Apache and Coconino County as well the state have responded to this incident to aid with protection of our communities, securing roads and thoroughfares and being ready to conduct evacuation operations if necessary. Winds are not predicted to be as severe tomorrow, this however could increase smoke impacts in the area.
many many thanks to all firefighters and prayers for their safety.
could someone please tell us how many MILES the fire is from PINETOP ? thanks
K
We have not received any new updates. The last we have heard is that the fire was about eight miles from Pinetop and estimated at 6,500 acres.
Are the areas of Pinetop, Showlow, etc. still on pre-evacuation?
Also thank you to all those who are working so hard, we continue to pray for your safety
Yes, all still on pre-evacuation notice.
When you say pre-evacuation area of the city of Show Low does this include ALL of show low city managed lands including Show Low lands managed by navajo county aka white Mountain lake?
For now it is referring to Show Low proper.
Question: Why are we not updated regarding how many estimated acres have burned; where the fire is currently burning; how close is it to Show Low proper; where is the current “line” being held? It would sure be nice to have a little more detail so we can stay in the know and make better decisions regarding when to evacuate. Thanks…and a special thanks to all the firefighters and support personnel!
We have not received any updates since the last press release. We are continually working on getting more information.
Thank you so much for the updates God bless you and everyone out there fighting to keep us safe.
I found AZ Central to be an excellent source of information today. They have a map to show where the fire was burning, estimates on the total acres burned and which direction it was heading. Its been updated every couple hours throughout the day.

We heard that 260 to Payson was closed…just wondering how true this…We’re goin to Phx on Mon/Tues and were just wondering if it would be safer to reroute to Flagstaff
Highway 260 is not and has not been closed nor it is expected to be closed at this time.
Is the fire out?
Why are we not evacuating with all of this smoke … ?
Amy, the smoke is drifting north east directly to the shelter area in Snowflake and across to Apache county areas as well. If you have smoke sensitivity issues you may chose to self-evacuate but again our northern areas of Navajo and Apache county are also getting inundated with smoke.
Will local residents be told when the pre-evacuation order is lifted?
Absolutely! We will send out that information in every way possible, when it happens.
Thank you so much! You have been such a calm, reliable and helpful resource for us, we appreciate you so much.
Need to know if 60 south of Carrizo at the 73 intersection is closed and is 73 closed from Canyon Day out to 60? Is there a location map for the fire that updates in real time besides google earth? Is the google earth map accurate as far as you know? (Its a little hard to decipher). Thanks for your help!
US 60 is open south of the 73 junction and Highway 73 is still completely open from the last information we received. Also, google earth is fairly accurate, but it only updates every so often. So depending on when the satellite(s) last passed over the area, there may be a delay.
I understand that AZ60 is closed – presumably for emergency traffic to use. Is there an expected date, time, or fire status required for re-opening to regular traffic? Or, has that not been determined, yet? This is a business oriented question – not just for casual knowledge.
Our Thanks to all the Fire-Fighters for their heroic performance and courage.

We are not sure when that stretch of highway will be re-opened and we have not been given an estimated time. We will post immediately once it is opened.
