Black Mesa Ranger District Plans to Burn Brush Pits

Springerville, AZ—October 19, 2018 – The Black Mesa Ranger District on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests plans to conduct a prescribed burn at the Black Mesa Ranger District in Township 12N, Range 17 East, and Section 32 just south of State Route (SR) 260 starting Monday, October 22, 2018.
Smoke will be seen from SR 260 and within the Overgaard Community. There may be light to moderate impacts within the area throughout the remainder of the week and should decrease significantly each evening after the primary ignition occurs.
The district also plans to burn the community brush pile in Forest Lakes on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 located on the north side of Forest Lakes in Township 11N, Range 14 East, and Section 12 off of Forest Road 99A. This pile burn will occur quarterly throughout the year from now on unless it is determined that more material is piled within the pit and needs to be burned before then.
Smoke may be seen from SR 260, and will be seen from within the northern portion of the Forest Lakes Community. There may be light to moderate impacts within the area throughout the remainder of the week and should decrease significantly each evening after the primary ignition occurs.
Once ignition occurs, crews will be on scene from ignition until there is no longer a threat of escape from the project boundaries.
