Firefighters have made considerable progress in the containment of the Canyon Fire, which is now 75 percent contained. Mop up operations are ongoing and the fire is mostly smoldering with an occasional single tree torching. Many resources have demobilized, and the remaining firefighters are actively patrolling the perimeters and extinguishing hot spots. Highway 87 is open to motorists.

Fireworks Restrictions in Northeastern Arizona 7/3/12
The Arizona Legislature adopted House Bill 2246 allowing the sale and use of consumer fireworks throughout the state of Arizona effective Dec. 1, 2010. While the legislation allows for the sale and purchase of consumer fireworks, they are not allowed to be ignited while fire restrictions are in place. On Federal lands fireworks of any kind are always prohibited.
The use of fireworks is currently prohibited within the municipalities as well as the unincorporated areas of Apache and Navajo Counties as everyone is currently under fire restrictions. Consumer fireworks authorized for sale under state law may NOT be sold to persons under the age of 16.
All local law enforcement and fire agencies are encouraging the citizens within their jurisdictions to always obey the law. When fireworks are allowed to be used please use them in a safe and responsible manner and make sure all remnants of fireworks are dead out dousing them in water if necessary prior to disposal.
We would like to encourage our citizens to take advantage of the commercial fireworks displays and events that are scheduled to occur on or around the July 4th holiday in many of our communities. (Please check with your local Chamber of Commerce for a list of events in your area.) Prior to any of the fireworks displays officials will be taking steps to eliminate any possible hazards. Some of these steps include increasing the moisture levels of the area using water tenders to soak the area as well as patrolling during and after the shows. Each community will consider weather conditions, like high winds, and postpone or cancel scheduled events as appropriate.
