NORTHERN GILA…NAVAJO…AND YAVAPAI COUNTIES IN NORTHERN ARIZONA.

.DAY ONE…THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT

SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL CONTINUE ACROSS NORTHERN ARIZONA THIS AFTERNOON WITH WIND GUSTS OF 35 TO 40 MPH FROM THE MOGOLLON RIM AND I-40 CORRIDOR NORTH. WINDS MAY COMBINE WITH LOW HUMIDITY GENERATING A BRIEF PERIOD OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THE UPPER LITTLE COLORADO RIVER VALLEY AND LOWER ELEVATIONS AROUND THE WHITE MOUNTAINS THIS AFTERNOON.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE AREA BRINGING A CHANCE OF RAIN AND HIGH ELEVATION SNOW SHOWERS…MOSTLY NORTH OF FLAGSTAFF.
STRONG SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL AFFECT EASTERN ARIZONA AHEAD OF THE FRONT…AND A WIND ADVISORY HAS BEEN ISSUED FROM 9 AM TO 7 PM MST SUNDAY. A BRIEF PERIOD OF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS OF WESTERN YAVAPAI COUNTY ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. TEMPERATURES WILL BE 10 TO 15 DEGREES COLDER THAN SATURDAY’S TEMPERATURES.

Whiteriver residents may be experiencing smoke from the Basin Fire

Whiteriver residents may have smoke in low lying areas due to the Basin Fire buring on the San Carlos Reservation.
Basin Fire burning in San Carlos
Last update posted April 30, 2014 at 11:03 a.m. The Basin Fire is a Low intensity Type 4 fire that has grown to 810 acres despite recent rain. The fire continues to consume the heavy fuels in the ponderosa pine ecosystem and creeping though the grass understory of pinion juniper on the ridges.

The main objectives of the fire are:

·Fire fighter and public safety.

·Monitor fire including observing and recording weather, fuels fire behavior and smoke, evaluating land use and resource management for using fire for ecological benefits and identifying values to be protected.

·Manage fire for multiple objectives including reducing hazardous fuels and loading, create ignition buffers and create open mosaic patterns in woodland ecosystems within the designated perimeter.

·Provide training opportunity for tribal members.

·Keep Tribe, Tribal members and neighbors informed on fire status.

Resources assigned include: 1 Type 6 engine, 1 Type 2 IA crew, 2 pieces of heavy equipment and 5 miscellaneous overhead.

Road 1516 and 1559 have been connected to secure the North and East side of the fire. Plans are to continue with black lining the perimeter and identifying potential holding features.

Red Flag Warning in Effect Today

5/6/14 8:30 – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 9:00 am this morning until 8:00 pm this evening. Winds out of the southwest will be at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Areas of blowing dust are possible across northeastern Arizona and may reduce visibility on roadways causing hazardous driving conditions.

A Red Flag Warning means that Critical Fire Weather conditions are either occuring or are imminent and with this system the minimum relative humidity is as low as 8% and winds are strong enough to contribute to extreme fire behavior.
