VERNON, AZ – Containment on the San Juan Fire has increased to 15%. The fire has grown to 6,975 acres as a result of the burnout operations that were conducted Monday. Crews will continue to mop-up hotspots and patrol fire lines to work towards containment. Firefighters have also begun rehabilitation of disturbances caused by fire suppression activities to return them to more naturally appearing conditions.
A public meeting will be held at the Vernon Fire Station at 6:00 p.m. tonight. Fire Managers will present an update on the current status of the fire and discuss what to expect after the fire. Representatives from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the White Mountain Apache Tribe will be present to answer questions from the public.
Mandatory evacuations remain in effect for the subdivisions of Red Cabin Ranch, Whiting Homestead, Carlock Ranch south of Buckelew Springs and Forest Service Road 61 and 2. Pre-evacuation notices have been issued for the area of Greens Peak Hideaway.
