6/14/14 7:30 – The Jack Fire, located thirteen miles northeast of Happy Jack on the Coconino National Forest, is currently 800 acres in size. The fire, burning towards the northeast on both sides of the canyon, is burning in grass and pinyon-juniper near State Route 87.
This afternoon, firefighters put in dozer line around the right flank of the fire; the line is holding with the aid of air resources. Retardant and bucket work was used to hold the left flank with ground crews working to establish an indirect line. Firefighters will work into the night.
Tomorrow, the National Weather Service is forecasting a high near 72 degrees, southwest winds around 14 mph increasing to 24 mph in the morning, gusts could get as high as 37 mph.
No structures are threatened. The rock climbing area in Jack’s Canyon had been evacuated and is closed at this time. Smoke may be seen in areas north of the fire such as Joseph City, Winslow and Holbrook.
