Sycamore Fire Update

7/23/14 – Monitoring continues with daily aerial flights of the Sycamore Fire located near Bear Valley (Township 2 N, Range 31 E, Section 15) within the Blue Primitive Area. The fire is located on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests’ (ASNFs) Clifton Ranger District. The fire started last week and has increased to approximately 2000 acres in size as of Tuesday evening. Smoke may be visible from US Highways 180/191, and the community within the Blue Area as well as the town of Alpine.

“We are achieving our objective of allowing the fire to move across the landscape burning a lot of dead and down fuels. The fire is moving south staying on the ground with no crowning at this time. With potential rain activity expected this week it will help in keeping the fire from growing rapidly,” according to Justin Thompson, Clifton Fire Management Officer.

The National Weather Service is calling for 50 percent chance of show and thunderstorms today. Partly
sunny, with a temperature falling to around 69 degrees by 5 pm. Light south southeast wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Tonight 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy with a low around 52 degrees and south wind 5 to 8 mph.
