Increasing Subtropical Moisture This Week

8/25/14 – A trough of low pressure will combine with increasing subtropical moisture to bring numerous showers and thunderstorms to northern Arizona starting late tonight. Heavy rain will be the greatest threat which could lead to areas of flooding mainly in and around wildfire burn areas and creeks and washes in Yavapai County that received the heavy rain last week. The combination of strengthening winds and instability will bring the threat of strong thunderstorms that could potentially produce hail and strong winds.

Tuesday through Sunday a trough of low pressure will combine with increasing subtropical moisture to bring numerous showers and thunderstorms to northern Arizona from Tuesday through early Wednesday morning. Heavy rain will be the greatest threat which could lead to areas of flooding. The highest threat for flooding will be from the Grand Canyon, Mogollon Rim and the White Mountains, southward into Yavapai and Gila counties where moisture is richest. The combination of strengthening winds and instability will bring the threat of strong thunderstoms that could potentially produce hail and strong winds. Showers and storms will decrease by Wednesday afternoon.
