Cinder Fire

Springerville, AZ—September 27, 2018– The lightning caused Cinder Fire on the Springerville Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests is about 300 acres. It is burning north of State Route (SR) 260 between FR 8538 and the cinder pit. Fuel types are grass, pine mix and fir.
It will be monitored and patrolled, natural fires when introduced into the forests create a resilient and healthy forest. Natural fire is one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems.
Smoke will be produced by the Cinder Fire and it may be visible from SR 260, SR 261, and the communities of Vernon, Greer, Round Valley, and at Greens Peak. Smoke inversion happens on clear, cold, still evenings like those that we are having this time of year. It is heavy and tends to sit close to the ground in low lying areas, especially under low wind conditions.
