Rocky and Telephone Final Update

September 17, 2019

Springerville, September 17, 2019 – For Immediate Release.  The Rocky and Telephone wildfires which were both started by lighting, September 3, 2019 are nearing containment.  Firefighters guided these fires within an established perimeter while allowing them to perform their natural role in the ecosystem.

The Rocky Fire, burning 5 miles south of Heber/Overgaard, on the Black Mesa Ranger District, reached 3702 acres, reducing hazardous fuel accumulations and restoring forest health.

The Telephone Fire, burning on the Lakeside Ranger District, near Lake Mountain, reached 2361 acres before rain fell on the fire area.  Fire activity is minimal with a few logs continue to smolder.

A small contingent of resources remain on both fires to patrol and monitor through the week to prevent any possible threats.

Both fires will bring positive benefits to the landscape by encouraging new growth of vegetation for the many plant and animal species whose habitats depend on periodic fire.
